EVENTS

"Buffalo Altar: A Texas Symphony" September 20, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.

Barry Corbin, of Urban Cowboy and Northern Exposure fame, stars as C. L. Pettigrew Sr., an 81-year-old oilman in Stephen Harrigan's short story based on an archaeological discovery of bison bones at Caprock Canyons State Park, located near Canyon, Texas. The discovery revealed evidence of the Folsum culture that existed over 10,000 years ago.

TFT Western Heritage Park is located at 3099 N. Oak Avenue in Mineral Wells.

According to J. Todd Frazier's blog:

The play "was commissioned by the Institute of American Music of the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, the result of a three year collaboration between composer Jefferson Todd Frazier and writer Stephen Harrigan. The Eastman School was interested in a musical piece about Texas, Harrigan said."

"Frazier and Harrigan wanted "something that felt alive and contemporary but also visibly connected to Texas' rich and complex history. In the end, they decided the best way to tell the story of Texas was through the voice of a more-or-less representative Texan, an 81-year-old oilman reminiscing about a long-ago morning in a West Texas canyon that changed his life."
